How Black Lavender Co. Got Started
I didn’t start Black Lavender Co. because I had a big business plan.
At first, I was actually thinking about starting with soap. That was my original idea...something simple, every day, and useful. I was in that phase of just exploring what I wanted to create and how I wanted it to look. But while I was talking about it with my best friend, she paused and said, “What about candles too?”....And something about that stuck with me, because I was already someone who loved lighting candles, switching scents with the seasons, and paying attention to how fragrance changed the feeling of a space. I just hadn’t thought of it as something I would actually build a business around yet.
So instead of it being soap or candles, it became soap and candles...at least in my mind at the time. And that conversation is really where everything started to shift.
Over time, candles just kept pulling more of my attention. The way they completely change a room without doing anything physically. The way scent can shift a mood in seconds. The way a small flame can turn an ordinary moment into something slower and more intentional. That’s what made me lean into this more seriously.
What I’ve always been drawn to is how small things shape the feeling of a home. Fresh air coming through windows. Soft lighting in the evenings. A space that feels lived in but still peaceful. And scent...more than anything, has always stood out to me. It can completely change the atmosphere of a room without you even noticing it happening.
At some point, I realized I wasn’t just enjoying candles anymore, I was paying attention to how I wanted my space to feel. That’s when BLC really started taking shape.
I wanted to create scents that felt intentional. Not overly complicated. Not overwhelming. Just grounded in real life...the kind of life that has busy days, slow evenings, and everything in between. So when I create a scent, I’m not just thinking about how it smells. I’m thinking about moments. What a slow morning feels like, what coming home after a long day feels like, what makes a space feel softer without trying too hard.
On the product side, I also knew I wanted things I felt good about using in my own home, so I work with soy wax and clean fragrance oils, and I avoid ingredients like phthalates, paraffin, and Prop 65 chemicals.
But at its core, BLC isn’t just about products. It’s about the small shift that happens in everyday life...A candle you light while you’re cooking, a scent that becomes part of your routine, a moment that makes your space feel like home.
That’s what this started as for me. So, thank you for being here and for supporting this little dream of mine.
